About

On this blog you can see and read about some of the very special things in the holdings of Balliol College Library. These include 5–7,000 early printed and rare books, mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. Many of these are the bequest of Nicholas Crouch (1618–1690), an Oxford medical academic and practitioner, and some of the posts here are by the cataloguer who is currently exploring this treasure trove. You can read more about the early printed book collection here.

Other Library gems are the College’s archives and manuscripts, which include medieval manuscripts, personal papers and institutional archives: 85,000 images of these are online and you can find links to them, and to the Archivist’s blog, in the sidebar below.

Please see the main College website for more information about the Library, including details of forthcoming exhibitions, links to all the Library’s social media sites, information about its history and its resources for current College members.
